Consider your options

Discontinuing means you’ll lose your place in your course, so it’s a good idea to assess your options before making a decision.

Thinking about leaving your course?

Students consider leaving their course for many different and valid reasons, but you may not need to discontinue your studies to find a solution that works for you. Many students find that the right support, a short-term adjustment or a study break is all they need to get them back on track.

If you're considering leaving your course, it's worth taking a moment to explore your options first.

Firstly, what kind of student are you?

How to discontinue

If discontinuing your course is the right decision for you, the steps below will guide you through the process.

Step 1: When to request discontinuation

You should submit the Course Discontinuation request form before 11.59pm on the census date. If you submit it later, you'll be charged for the units you're enrolled in, and you may receive a fail grade after a certain date.

This could affect you if you decide to return to study later on, so make sure you check the penalties for withdrawing from units.

Step 2: Submit the form

If you're a coursework student at Monash University, Australia, you can submit the form below:

Course Discontinuation Request form

In the form, you’ll be asked to explain why you’re requesting a discontinuation. Understanding what has influenced your decision helps us identify support services for you, and improve our experience for all Monash students. You can also elect to be contacted by Monash Connect about our services and next steps.

What happens next

Once you’ve submitted the form, we’ll review your request and contact you within two University working days. You'll receive confirmation of your course discontinuation by email once it's been processed.

Re-enrolling

Any units already completed at Monash will remain on your academic record, but you'll need to reapply if you want to return to study.
