课程简介

In this unit, you will explore recent advances in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and systems biology. You will learn about the latest sequencing technologies underlying these fields of research and obtain an understanding of computational methodologies used to explore these massive datasets.

You will gain hands-on experience in extracting, mining and integrating publicly available datasets relevant to biomedical research. This unit will also provide training in statistical methods for biotechnology scientists.

  1. ULO1 Apply knowledge about cutting-edge, high-throughput sequencing technologies to a variety of clinical applications
  2. ULO2 Use bioinformatics software for analysing high-throughput sequencing datasets and mining the outcome (including basics of coding to run software in command line mode)
  3. ULO3 Gain knowledge about the functionality of genome browsers and databases to enable navigation through these resources from different model organisms
  4. ULO4 Customise data analysis strategies for specific research questions in biomedical research
  5. ULO5 Effectively communicate and present bioinformatics and systems biology concepts applied to biomedicine

5 contact hours (2 hours seminars and 3 hours practical/ workshop)

7 hours of private study (expected to be spent on assignments, and designated pre-class and post-class learning activities to prepare for classes and consolidate knowledge.
