课程简介

This unit focuses on molecular biology methodology, transcriptomics and proteomics, which underpin commercial developments in the rapidly expanding biotechnology industry. Advanced techniques for gene manipulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and techniques for investigating gene and protein function, including mutagenesis, RNA interference and expression profiling, will be considered. Industrial and research applications of these technologies, such as genetic manipulation of plants and animals, gene therapy, multi-omics studies, and personalized medicine will be explored.

  3. ULO3 Critically evaluate a variety of approaches to a particular scientific or industrial problem;
  4. ULO4 Demonstrate proficiency in a wide range of techniques commonly used in biotechnology and in the interpretation of data acquired by these techniques;
  5. ULO5 Demonstrate advanced scientific writing skills including capability to integrate knowledge learned from lectures and practical classes as well as to meet the expectations of academic writing.

教学方式

Active learning - A combination of teaching methods including lectures, laboratory work, and self-directed learning will enable you to achieve the objectives of the unit. The organisation of lectures is designed to promote the meaningful learning of molecular biology concepts, and their practical research and commercial applications. Laboratory work and assignments provide an opportunity to apply the concepts of molecular biology in relevant practical situations, and to practice your data analysis and communication of science skills. This will be achieved through data generation, collection and evaluation in the laboratory program. These skills will be further refined through assignments which engage you in the detailed analysis of complex data and interaction with bioinformatic software.

预期工作量

• 1 hour of lecture (online, self study);

• 2 hours of workshops (scheduled);

• 3 hours of laboratory (scheduled) and

• 6 hours of independent study per week
