课程简介

This unit has been designed for students who have demonstrated a strong aptitude for chemistry during secondary and/or tertiary studies. In this unit, you will exploit your understanding of general and physical chemistry discussed in CHM1051 to explore the characteristics of chemicals through a number of interesting case studies incorporating a range of significant biological and synthetic molecules. Along the way, you will discuss the formation of inorganic coordination complexes and investigate their role in colour and magnetism, and metals in biological systems. The concepts developed within the workshops are complemented through an extended laboratory program where you will have the opportunity to use a variety of analytical techniques and design their own experiments to solve a range of chemical problems.

  6. ULO6 Formulate hypotheses and design chemical experiments to synthesise and collect unique data using a range of sophisticated apparatus and technologies;
  7. ULO7 Foster the acquisition of practical skills by exploiting an inquiry-based approach to the chemistry laboratory experience;
  8. ULO8 Communicate chemistry, and discuss the social and environmental responsibility of chemists in the global community.

Problem-based learning - Problem-based learning will be explored in all classes and laboratory sessions and will enable the development of relevant observation and descriptive skills, as well as communication skills.

Online learning - Online learning will be used to illustrate and explain concepts and to highlight links between theory and laboratory work.

Active learning - Active learning will occur in all classes and laboratory sessions.

预期工作量

• Two 1-hour online video content or equivalent;

• One hour of directed independent study;

• One 2-hour workshop and

• One 4-hour laboratory as scheduled per week.
