课程简介

The unit begins with a series of topics that focus on the general overview of cellular metabolism in biochemistry. This is followed by understanding the structures, functions as well as chemical properties of important biomolecules that involve lipid and protein. Finally, a comprehensive study on the lipid and protein cellular metabolism which include the generation of energy from these two major dietary components from daily diet are conducted.

  1. ULO1 Describe what cellular metabolism is and how it affects our life in general;
  2. ULO2 Differentiate the basic structures and chemical properties of lipid and protein, and access how these properties influence their biological functions;
  3. ULO3 Examine the mechanisms of storage and processing of lipid and protein;
  4. ULO4 Critically evaluate the mechanisms for control of metabolic reaction sequences involving lipid and protein;
  5. ULO5 Foster teamwork, demonstrate advanced laboratory skills, and communicate research observations/findings in the form of written reports and presentations.

教学方式与预期工作量

教学方式

Research activities - Three hours of practical sessions to develop proficiency in wet lab techniques, data analysis and report writing. The practical sessions are in parallel with the topics delivered in this unit.

Problem-based learning - Project-based assessments will be conducted to enable you to demonstrate knowledge of concepts and critical evaluation those concepts in cellular metabolism.

Active learning - One hour of tutorial session according to the lecture topic. You are expected to participate in this session that involve various scenario-based questions. This will enable you to apply what you have learned from this unit in real life scenarios.

预期工作量

• Two hours of online pre-recorded lectures;

• Seven-eight hours of independent study;

• One-hour tutorial session and

• Six 3-hour practical sessions per week.
