课程简介

This unit is about developing proficiency with the tools of the trade in the practice of Computer Science. It will include mastering the command-line, using a powerful text editor, mastery of version control systems, debugging and profiling, working securely with remote machines, fundamentals of virtual machines, data wrangling and metaprogramming. These topics and the underlying foundations are crucial to be an effective computer scientist and programmer. The unit will be very practical and revolve about solving real-world challenges faced by computer scientists.

  1. ULO1 Describe the main concepts and advantages of modern distributed version control systems and efficiently apply those in developing complex computer program.
  2. ULO2 Apply common-practice methods to identify and fix software bugs, and techniques to measure and optimise the performance of software.
  3. ULO3 Describe how to use remote and virtual machines for developing and deploying computer programs.
  4. ULO4 Explain how to use metaprogramming concepts and command shell tools for efficient data wrangling and software development.
  5. ULO5 Explain the basics of everyday security practices and the use of cryptographic concepts and tools when developing software and establishing secure communication channels.
