课程简介

This unit focuses on manufacturing processes that can be scaled up for volume production. This includes casting, CNC machining, powder metallurgy and metal forming. For each of these processes, you will learn about each of their strengths, limitations, cost and sustainability aspects. This will enable you to objectively select an appropriate technique for a particular set of requirements. You will also learn to design components that leverage the strengths of each of the different processes to optimally achieve the desired outcomes. You will also have the opportunity to work o a project that put these into practice and gain some hands-on experience.

学习成果4

官方原文(Learning outcomes),版权属 Monash University。

  1. ULO1 Describe the steps involved in various manufacturing processes for production at scale, including their strengths and limitations.
  2. ULO2 Select appropriate part manufacturing processes while balancing functional requirements, performance, cost and sustainability.
  3. ULO3 Propose part design changes to improve suitability to given manufacturing processes.
  4. ULO4 Identify and carry out the necessary steps to conduct a small-scale production run and then reflect on the outcomes.

教学方式与预期工作量

教学方式

Active learning - You will be exposed to the learning material via recorded lectures, reading and pre-class activities. You would then work on worksheets during the workshop that would see you applying your knowledge.

Problem-based learning - Teams, each with four students, will work on an overarching project that would run throughout the semester. Your team would design a part and then the associated die and tool that can be used to fabricate the part. The part would then be fabricated. Finally, your team would test out work on a small production run and evaluate the outcomes.

预期工作量

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
