Additive manufacturing allows components to be produced with reduced weight, reduced part count, less scrap, and increased complexity compared to conventional manufacturing processes. However, components must be redesigned to take advantage of these advantages. This unit introduces you to the principles of design for additive manufacturing; the optimisation of designs; and the practical design-to-product workflow.

- ULO1 Identify, interpret and analyse manufacturing options for simple components primarily from an engineering perspective, but also considering the cost of manufacture.
- ULO2 Use creative design methodologies and skills to re-design parts for additive manufacturing.
- ULO3 Use computer modelling techniques to optimise design for additive manufacturing, whilst accounting for the limitations of the methods.
- ULO4 Produce and evaluate a finished part from design to manufacture.
- ULO5 Generate findings in both written and verbal formats and critique and evaluate the work of others.
- ULO6 Engage in regular self-assessment and peer-assessment of individual and team performance as a primary means of tracking continuing professional development.
Active learning - • You will engage in hands-on learning by applying the topic using analysis and software to model the problem during class.
• You will participate in Q&A learning activity and discussion with peers on the topics.
Enquiry-based learning - You will discuss feasible and practical solutions to the problems, design application and provide an actual product for each problem.
Case-based teaching - You will discuss case samples, including industry problems, and the approach to solutions to these situational problems by using software and 3D printing machines.
Industry-based learning - • You will review and understand the technology and challenges faced by industries.
• You will apply the challenges in the lab (3D printing) situation.
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
