课程简介

The unit covers all aspects of geomechanics at an elementary level, as well as basic engineering geology, formation and weathering processes, sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks, soil- and rock-forming minerals, geological mapping and modelling, site investigations, in-situ testing, engineering classification of soil and rock, weight-volume relationship, and the two/three phase model. It also includes 2D seepage, effective stress theory, stresses in a soil mass and shear strength.

  1. ULO1 Discuss the knowledge of basic engineering geology in designing civil infrastructure on soils/rocks.
  2. ULO2 Select and report results of geotechnical site investigations.
  3. ULO3 Identify and classify soils and rocks based on standard classification systems.
  4. ULO4 Identify different phases in soils and determine their densities, void ratios, porosities.
  5. ULO5 Determine total, effective and pore water pressures in soils/rocks including implications of loading on drainage behaviour of soils/rocks.
  6. ULO6 Calculate quantities of water flowing through soils and evaluate its effect on soils stresses and stability.
  7. ULO7 Identify and determine appropriate shear strength parameters of soils/rocks for engineering design.
  8. ULO8 Predict incremental stresses in soils/rocks due to applied loads.

教学方式与预期工作量

教学方式

Problem-based learning - In this unit, fundamentals will be taught in the lectures while practice and laboratory classes are designed to develop hands-on problem-solving experience creating links between theories and practice. Students will be given geo-mechanical problems at introductory level during the practice class. Students solve these questions individually but consultation with group members and demonstrators are encouraged. Students will also be challenged with complex field-oriented problems to stimulate advanced learning through Assignment tasks. Assignments will be given to groups to develop problem solving, writing and teamwork skills.

预期工作量

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
