This unit aims to develop the foundation for exploring tools and methods to analyse electric power systems. It provides an introduction to main elements such as generators, transformers, transmission lines, and loads and their mathematical models. Then using these models, the unit presents analytical tools to analyse the power system in steady state and under fault conditions. In particular, tools and techniques for power flow, symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults, voltage control, frequency control, and system stability will be studied in detail. Finally, electromagnetic transients in power systems will be introduced.

Active learning
Peer assisted learning
Problem-based learning - The lectures are used to address the common learning objectives of all students and provide opportunities for class discussion with questions encouraged. The lecturer will often ask questions and you will be expected to participate in an interactive experience. Learning in the unit is supplemented by a set of prescribed practical problems. While practical questions contain examinable material, they are to be solved as part of your self-study workload. The purpose of the 1-hour practical classes scheduled during the semester is to allow consultation time to resolve difficulties you may have with solving practical class problems.
Malaysia Campus
Lectures are delivered via video recordings. A weekly two-hour workshop session offers opportunities for in-depth discussions, with questions encouraged. The same session on campus also includes consultation time to help you resolve difficulties with practice problems.
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
